WOO HEE HAW HAW

This phrase came into general use following the publication Tom Wolfe’s book about the space programme - The Right Stuff, 1979:

“One of the phrases that kept running through the conversation was ‘pushing the outside of the envelope’… [That] seemed to be the great challenge and satisfaction of flight test.”

Wolfe didn’t originate the term, although it’s appropriate that he used it in a technical and engineering context, as it was first used in the field of mathematics.

The envelope here isn’t the container for letters, but the mathematical envelope, which is defined as ‘the locus of the ultimate intersections of consecutive curves’. In a two-dimensional example, the set of lines described by the various positions of a ladder sliding down a wall forms an envelope - in this case an arc, gently curving away from the intersection of the wall and floor. Inside that envelope you will be hit by the ladder; outside you won’t. -Phrase Finder

THANKS GUYS I’M WERNER HERZOG AND I’LL BE HERE ALL WEEK!

ENJOY YOUR DINNER FOLKS! YOU’VE BEEN WONDERFUL!

AND DON’T FORGET TO PICK UP MY NEW CD: “There is a sort of harmony. The harmony of overwhelming and collective murder. And we in comparison to the articulate vileness and baseness and obscenity; we in comparison to that enormous articulation; we only sound and look like barely pronounced and half-finished sentences out of a stupid suburban novel. And we have to become humble in front of this overwhelming misery, overwhelming fornication, overwhelming growth, and overwhelming lack of order. Even the stars in the sky look like a mess. There is no harmony in the universe. We need to get acquainted to this idea that there is no real harmony as we have conceived it.”

Yikes!

Sorry I haven’t touched this in a few days (because all of you are definitely super invested at this point, right?), It’s been a super busy week or two and I haven’t really been able to go near the internet for risk of getting totally sucked down into the intertubes and never getting anything done. Anyways, the good news is that I should be back on in the next couple of days and in three weeks or so will be headed off to Kyrgyzstan for five months.

Which means that there will be good updates and photos and neat things of genuine interest in addition to uh, youtube videos. Although there will still definitely be youtube videos. Because I love youtube videos.

Foxygen - Take the Kids Off Broadway cover

Here’s your haunted house soundtrack if your haunted house theme is “ramshackle time travelling troubadour shack that seems like it’s about to fall over but is actually kinda gorgeous once you really get in there and just live for a bit” which I realize is not exactly a standard haunted house theme but maybe it’s one that would get a decent bit of traffic if you served some craft-brewed beer and required bow ties and/or suspenders. Which is to say, this is TARDIS music right here. It is bigger on the inside and exists in multiple places and time periods all at the same time. Of course it’s associated with madman/genius/wolfman Richard Swift. Download it now before you hear a tarted-up, watered down version playing at Starbucks next summer.

hey, well check that out.

tumblr’s neat guys!
